Garages

I always thought the garage of a house was one of the coolest parts.  I was a sports fanatic growing up and that’s where we kept all the equipment therefore making it my favorite place of the house.  I thought of them as hideouts because they were always off the side of the house and not considered the inside of the house.

Outside of a Garage

Usually the garage of a house is attached to the main part and therefore has same sidings, paint color and roof material.  There is usually a door on the side or near the front to allow access inside other than the main door where the cars enter.

Some garages have two single doors for the access of only one car each.  Others have 1 large door that is big enough for two cars to enter.  More expensive houses have 3 car garages with 1 of each.  Most have electronic garage doors with a key pad outside to enter a code to open.  Older house have manual garages that you need a key for.

Inside of a Garage

One of its most common uses is for storage.  In my garage at home we built shelves and keep many boxes with belongs on them.  Also we keep seasonal things such as lawn chairs in the winter and shovels/skies in the summer stored away.

Another common usage for a garage is a work area.  Men especially, have tools and work tables set up for building and fixing things.  Again shelves for keeping tools such as saws, sanders, wrenches and nails, clean and organized.

My favorite choice of what to do with a garage is make it a place to hangout and relax.  It’s a place to go when you need to get away or have your own time with friends.  The garage of my friends house on south campus is where we hangout and set up for parties.  They have a music system in there, chairs, darts and a fridge.

Some people use the garage for more than one of these.  They can keep their cars in the garage while still having room to move around and keep items in storage.

As J. B. Jackson’s essay stats, the garage was used only for protection and storage of cars prior to WWII.  Many houses didn't even have them and simply had an overhang to park under.  Now every house is built with a garage and are used in a number of ways.  He had many interesting points about the garage of an American house and the landscape change and traditions that followed for generations.
