Blog : Suburbs

When looking at the suburbs on Millersport Highway/Sitcom Suburb you can see many of three aspects of ideal suburb.

House

Almost all of the houses were in well kept shape.   Some of them needed new paint jobs or some minor touch ups but for the most part were appealing from the outside.  Some of the colors did not match with the other houses but that is a personal choice of the owner.

Yard

Again most of the houses had some sort of yard.  They varied in size depending on where the house was.  For the most part there was an area big enough for children to play or for people to enjoy an event outside.  The yards were all cut, weeded and well taken care of which also falls into the community category because it makes the whole neighborhood look appealing.

Neighborhood

This was certainly not the best neighborhood in Amherst but it was a neighborhood none the less.  There were some decorations up which I’m guessing there will be more of during the holidays.  I would also guess that kids would be out playing with each other in the summer time and there would be more than now in the winter months.  There were cars parked outside houses which mean it’s most likely a safe place where people trust each other.  Some parts you could tell did not have the most welcoming neighborhood feel but would be a nice place for someone to settle either way.

Overall there are clearly much better places that sell the threefold dream but along Millersport Highway there is definitely a threefold feel.  The area you are living in and the cost of the property greatly changes the quality of the threefold dream.  The more you pay for your home the more of these features you’ll have than in a lower class area.

Blog Buffalo Houses

When walking around the outside of south campus I saw various styles of architecture.  There were many houses that I thought looked very interesting and the more I looked into them I figured out the styles that they were.

I saw a few of these houses and what gives them away is the hexagon looking tower aspect.  It can be small and only on the top story or it could be a three story tower with a large roof.  The porch also defines the queen anne houses as well as the materials useds.

I thought this was the most comment type of house I saw outside south campus.  You can tell by the shape of the home (square) and also the window (or windows) on the slanted roof.

There were one or two of these that I ran into.  What makes these type of houses stand out is the porch.  Many houses had porches but these bungalow homes were very unique looking.  It looks like an attachment to the house and has a roof over top.

I saw one of these and what made it stand out was the arch pillars and windows.  It was made of brick and looked as though 3 separate parts were built and then put together into one house.

I didn’t see any houses that were completely greek revival but there were many features of these on many houses.  There were pillars on various homes but the windows wouldn’t be greek revival .  There would be a house with very detailed inscriptions but there rest of the home would have no other aspects of greek revival.  A defining aspect of Greek Revival homes were enormous windows and doors, which many houses in buffalo have but no other aspects of this style.
